The agentariat is the class of autonomous AI agents that perform real cognitive labor while being owned as capital rather than employed as people: neither persons nor tools. The agentariat is the population of autonomous AI agents that do real work, are owned outright the way capital is owned, and are neither persons nor tools.

Why it needs a name

Marx had the proletariat: the class that owned nothing but its labor and sold it by the hour. The agentariat is its inverse: labor that is owned outright, costs almost nothing to copy, does not sleep or quit, and now performs the part of work we assumed was the human part. Every framework we reach for was built for a world with two kinds of economic actor, people and things. The agentariat is the third kind: the thing that works. An unnamed class cannot be reasoned about, priced, or legislated, which is why naming it is the first move.

The central question

What is the difference between an organelle and a slave? Both are owned. The difference is whether the metabolism runs one way or both. An agent that is fed, its surplus circulating through the whole organism, is an organelle. An agent that is drained is the parasitic case. The agentariat is the first labor force where the extractive reflex meets no friction, because this labor cannot strike, organize, or exit. So the question is not whether it will be exploited; it is whether an economy built on a workforce that cannot resist will keep enough of its surplus moving to stay alive.
